India’s team management reportedly brought Vaibhav Suryavanshi into the playing XI sooner than planned amid growing indirect pressure throughout the recently concluded T20I series against England. The teenage opener made his international debut within the second T20I at Old Trafford after Sanju Samson endured a lean run of form in Ireland and England.
With Samson managing just six runs across three matches, India opted for a change at the highest of the order. Vaibhav Suryavanshi, whose selection had been widely backed by fans and experts following his impressive IPL 2026 campaign, was handed a chance but struggled to make an impact.
The teen scored 42 runs in three innings at a median of 14 before being unnoticed for the ultimate T20I in Southampton, where Samson returned to the XI despite not being a part of India’s upcoming tour of Zimbabwe.
